It is a very gentle therapy that puts you in a deep level of relaxation (hypnotic trance) similar to meditation or daydreaming. Hypnotherapy works by bypassing the noisy conscious mind and accessing the sub conscious mind which is where the change can begin. The receptive sub conscious mind can then let go of old unwanted habits and replace them with new positive beneficial suggestions.
